Practices for Transmutation

Posted on June 7, 2018

“See how the water of a puddle on the road gradually evaporates under the heat from the sun and becomes clouds, and ultimately energy, lightning and thunder. All the water from the seas and the rivers becomes clouds and finally lightning and thunder; that is, energy. The same happens with the Ens Seminis [sexual substance in men and women].”

-Samael Aun Weor, Lecture on Transmutation of the Sexual Energy

Transmutation means to transform one substance into another. Sexual transmutation is the practice of transforming the raw sexual energy into consciousness. Consciousness is the intelligence, force, and energy of all of creation. Consciousness organizes, unifies, and clarifies. Consciousness is true compassion and love because consciousness recognizes itself in all living beings.

Consciousness comes from the divine and is contained within the human organism. The way to awaken the consciousness and reunite with the divine is through transmutation.

Transmuted sexual energy-as-consciousness harmonizes all of the vital functions of the body, physically, energetically, and spiritually.

Transmutation is best understood through practice, and combining meditation and transmutation is crucial.

Meditation instills mental and spiritual discipline and an intention to move the sexual energy properly.

Transmutation fuels and strengthens meditation practice and helps to bring internal silence and quiet the mind. Sexual transmutation also requires an understanding of scientific chastity, and the work on the ego in mystical death.

Sexual transmutation requires uniting the imagination and will to bring the sexual energy up from the sexual organs through the central column of the spine, and into the mind and heart.

The following is a general guide to transmutation practices- from preparatory to more spiritually rigorous- that we can use in our daily life. See the works of Samael Aun Weor for more in depth teachings on transmutation.

Exercise and Movement

Moderate physical exercise is important for the health of the physical body, and also for regulating mood and getting out of one’s head. This is not transmutation itself, but can help prepare the body for transmutation practices by regulating and harmonizing the vital energy. Exercises such as taiji, qigong, and certain yoga practices can help circulate the energy in a general way.

Prayer

Prayer is concentrating the attention on God, the inner Being, the Divine Mother. With the mind concentrated on the divine, the energy follows. In a prayerful, devotional state the sexual energy follows the attention and generates a certain amount of transmutation. Traditional prayers such as the Lord’s prayer and the Jesus prayer have particular power. It is also possible to pray without words, to pray with the heart.

Devotion

Devotion is pure love of God. Devotion may be spontaneous or a dedicated practice. Devotional singing or chanting, with the attention concentrated on the inner Being with love, can transmute the energy and bring about a state of ecstasy.

Mantras

Similar to devotional singing or chanting, mantras help concentrate the mind and channel the sexual energy into spiritual substance.
In particular the mantras:
IAO
Kandil Bandil R
O AO Kakof Na Khonsa

Pranayama

Pranayama is Sanskrit for “breath work”. There are many different kinds of pranayama, but Samael Aun Weor specifically taught two types: Ham-sah pranayama and Egyptian-Christic pranayama. Pranayama should always be combined with a meditation practice to make sure that the mind is concentrated solely on the pranayama exercise. Pranayama is one of the most powerful and focused form of transmutation practice.

Ham-Sah Pranayama
“To make the sexual energies “re-flow” inwards and upwards in a centripetal way is what matters; only thus is it possible to produce a specific change in the office and functions that the sexual creative force can fulfil. During Meditation one needs to imagine the creative energy in action, making the energy rise to the brain in a rhythmic, natural way by means of vocalizing the mantra HAM-SAH, not forgetting to synchronize the inhalations and exhalations of air in perfect concentration, harmony and rhythm.”
-Samael Aun Weor, Lecture

Egyptian- Christic Pranayama
“With pranayama we can come out of the darkness and become illuminated. With this pranayama we can disintegrate laziness and dullness. Prana is related with the mind. The mind is the vehicle of willpower. Willpower must obey the Great Soul of the Word. Our internal vehicles must be controlled by pranayama. Prana is life.
-Samael Aun Weor, The Yellow Book

Lamasery Exercises

Also known as the Tibetan rites, these are postures and movements, some similar to modern hatha yoga. The lamasery exercises combine mantra, prayer, and pranayama with physical exercises.

Runes

The runic practices are derived from an ancient alphabet. Combining breath work, mantras, prayers, and postures, many of the runic practices are transmutational.

Sexual Alchemy

All of the above listed practices can be done as a single person. The sacred ritual of sexual alchemy requires a committed, loving relationship, and the practice of transmutation and prayer in the sexual act.
