The Gospel of Thomas: Passages and Interpretations

Posted on November 19, 2015

“Yeshua said ‘I have thrown fire upon the world, and look, I am watching till it blazes.'”
-Gospel of Thomas 10

The Passion of Christ is the great sacrifice of the force of love penetrating into creation to redeem us. Great suffering generates great compassion. Christ is the fire constantly renewing itself. INRI Ignis Natura Renovatur Integra.

“If the flesh came into being because of spirit it is a marvel, but if spirit came into being because of body it is a marvel of marvels. Yet I marvel at how this great wealth has come to dwell in this poverty.”
-Gospel of Thomas 29

The ‘flesh that comes into being because of spirit’ is the descent of the divine creative force into denser realms until finally crystallizing into Malkuth, the physical world. The ‘spirit coming into being because of body’ is an even greater marvel because it is the initiatic path of the return to God.

“The disciples said to Jesus, ‘Tell us what Heaven’s kingdom is like.’ He said to them, ‘It’s like a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds, but when it falls on prepared soil, it produces a large plant and becomes a shelter for birds of the sky.’
-Gospel of Thomas 20

The mustard seed is the seed we each have inside of us that is the key to our spiritual regeneration. When nurtured and cultivated it grows, or illuminates, or re-ignites, the Tree of Life, the marvelous ladder back to God.

“Blessings on the lion if a human eats it, making the lion human. Foul is the human if a lion eats it, making the lion human.”
-Gospel of Thomas 7

The human eating the lion is the process of the intellectual animal transforming into the solar human by overcoming Karma, the Lions of the Law. The lion eating the human indicates the intellectual animal succumbing to the limitations of their condition.

“His disciples said, ‘Show us the place where you are, for we must seek it.’ He said to them, ‘Anyone here with two ears had better listen! There is light within a person of light, and it shines on the whole world. If it does not shine, it is dark.'”
-Gospel of Thomas 24

The light of the Essence of God shines through everyone, and it is our duty to let that light shine.

“Humankind is like a wise fisherman who cast his net into the sea and drew it up from the sea full of little fish. Among the fish he found a fine large fish. He threw all the little fish back into the sea and chose the large fish. Whoever has ears to hear should hear.”
-Gospel of Thomas 8

We must use our energies on Earth as “fishermen” to gather our resources and obtain that which is the most precious and worth our life’s work, the connection to God, the submission to our Being.

Yeshua said, “If your leaders tell you, ‘Look the kingdom is in heaven,’ then the birds of heaven will precede you. If they say, ‘It’s in the sea,’ then the fish will precede you. But the kingdom is inside you and it is outside you. When you know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will understand that you are children of the living father. But if you do not know yourselves, then you dwell in poverty and you are poverty.”
-Gospel of Thomas 3

The Kingdom of God is ruled by the One Law of Love. This Kingdom does not exist somewhere out in the exterior world or in the superficial parts of the mind. When we know ourselves then we have gnosis or direct knowledge that we are sparks of Essence of God, of our Inner Father.
