Meaning of the Rooster in Alchemy

The Sacred Rooster

The rooster is a sacred animal in many cultures The rooster is associated with the Greek phoenix, the Persian simurgh, the Indian garuda, and the Chinese fenghuang. These mythical birds and the rooster itself are universal symbol of strength, virility, fertility, and the call to awaken and resurrect.

The year 2017 in Chinese astrology is the year of the Fire Rooster, characterized by enduring strength, drive toward long-term goals, and fiery energy to take action. In Norse mythology, the crowing of three particular roosters occur at the beginning of the events foretelling the apocalypse.

“Even thus by the great sages ’tis confessed
The phoenix dies, and then is born again,
When it approaches its five-hundredth year;
On herb or grain it feeds not in its life,
But only on tears of incense and amomum,
And nard and myrrh are its last shroud.”
-Dante Alighieri, Inferno Canto XXIV

Greeting the Rising Sun

The rooster greets the Sun and the rising dawn in the East. The rooster’s crow heralds the solar logos, the Christ force which resurrects because of the solar power of sacrifice and love.

The initiatic path as taught by Master Samael Aun Weor includes the stages of creation, purification, and ripening of the soul. This process also occurs with the process of the awakening of the spiritual fire along the 33 vertebrae of the spinal column.

The rooster’s colorful feathers remind us of these stages of the initiatic path and the sacred colors of alchemy and the roosters crow at dawn relates with a particular degree of initiation.

Voice and Sexuality

The strength of the roosters crow, especially in relation to the rising Sun, is directly related with the power of its virility and fertility, and therefore, ability to regenerate and resurrect like the phoenix, like the Christ.

“In high, esoteric Masonry, the laryngeal chakra is represented by the hidden degree of the ‘rooster’. The rooster of the Passion sings when the Kundalini arrives at the canyon or vertebra related to the thyroid gland. All the power of the word resides in the sexual force of the rooster.”
-Samael Aun Weor, Secret Notes of a Guru

The sexual organs create new physical bodies, and the voice creates in the subtler worlds of feeling, thought, and will.

Words can heal or harm. It is easy to observe the state of any relationship based on the words and the quality of the voice when they speak to each other.

It used to be that a person’s word was their oath, but we have lost the sacredness of the word and speak frivolously. We know from the gospel of John that the Word is sacred because it creates. The Word, as in sexuality, can awaken the consciousness or put us into deeper hypnosis of the ego.

Christ, the Word

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The same was in the beginning with God.
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”
– John 1:1-5

“Every word crystallizes by means of the Tattvas; thus, this is how the present humanity has created its present life (disastrous and terrible): by means of the power of the word. This is why it was impossible for the rooster to be absent from the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. The rooster symbolizes the word…
When Hadit, our igneous serpent, arrives at the larynx and we receive the degree of the ‘rooster’, then we utter the golden language, and we create as the Gods, with the power of the word.
-Samael Aun Weor, Secret Notes of a Guru

The Tattwas are the energetic principles that precede our elements of nature. The tattwa tejas crystallizes into what we know as fire, the tattwa apas crystallizes into water, etc.

Words that are uttered crystalize principles from the subtler planes into this world, therefore we create for good or ill with our word. As the Kundalini rises vertebrae by vertebrae along the spine we must take more responsibility for our actions, words, and thoughts.
